Winter has finally arrived

Durango Snow

New Snow Fall in Durango

We’ve had a couple of small snows, but not the normal amount for this time of year. We woke up this morning to 8 inches of new snow and it’s still coming down. The ski resort will be very happy this morning as will the snowmobiling companys and the folks at Rapp Coral that do horse sleding.

I went out this morning and plowed the snow from the drive, but I have 2 inches of brand new snow I have to go clear. So pack up your skiis and come to Durango. Try the promo code “winter” when booking rooms. For a limited time it will give you a significant discount.

Summer Season comes to a Close and Fall Colors Blaze

The Summer Season has started to wind down and the leaves are already turning. Patra and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has stayed with us at Lightner Creek this year. It has been a remarkable year. Jan 28th I worked my last day as a firefighter and we moved to Colorado. We had no Idea what was in store for us. The fall rush to see the leaves turn will begin inĀ  few days, and be over by Mid October. We’re looking forward to a break.

We will start posting pictures and recipes up on the website in the next few days, including the picture of the barn that we have promised to send to so many guests.

We are trying to rent the entire Inn out for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. If anyone is interested give us a call. We will discount the property so that it is affordable.

In October our off season rates go into effect. Most of our rooms will be available at 99 dollars a night and still include a full breakfast.

All the Best from Durango,

Marvin Patra and Mark

Returning Guests

Exciting day for Lighnter Creek Inn. We had our first returning guests last night. Three months after their honeymoon, our first returning guests arrived for a quick weekend getaway from Denver. Sorry we haven’t been blogging, but we’ve been extraordinarily busy, but our first returning guests had to be mentioned.

Western Blue Bird

My favorite bird at the Bed and Breakfast is still the western bluebird. Yesterday a couple that was staying with us, ate breakfast and then sat outside for an hour watching the birds. At the end of the hour, they came inside and gave me a list of the birds that they had seen. They listed 27 different birds. I will try to post the list tomorrow.

Bright Neon Bird

Yesterday I saw a bird that I can’t identify. Its the first one I’ve seen, and It was spectacular. The bird had a bit of rust color under his chin and a white breast. Sitting still it’s feathers appeared to be brown. When the bird took to the air, it was nothing but neon blue wings. It was remarkable. Has anyone seen a bird like this? Do you know what it is?

Wild Weasel Turns Brown

Just 10 days ago we photographed a white weasel poking his head up out of the ground after a long winter. In 10 days, the weasel has already changed color and now is brown. We will post a new photo if we get lucky enough to capture another snap shot.

Spring Brings Good News

Reservations are up at Lightner Creekinn. People are booking early. The week after Christmas is already booked and September looks as if it will be our busiest month, as people come to enjoy the fall colors. Were running 30 percent higher in our bookings which is a big relief to new owners. We hope everyone comes to Durango for their vacation this year.

New Sentry at Durangos Lightner Creek Inn

We have a new live in sentry at Durango’s Lightner Creek Inn. The problem is, he has no name. Patra says we should have a contest to find him a good name.

Snow and Green Grass

Spring and Winter have clashed outside our windows today. It has been snowing all day, often with the sun shining through the clouds. If you look up at the sky, it looks like a blizzard is engulfing you, but the day is warm enough that there has been no accumulation, and the grass on the ground is green. The house is empty today, with our last guest checking out early this morning. It’s a great day to tidy up the inside of the inn, and sit by the fireplace with a cup of hot coffee. It’s snowing so hard, I can barely see across the street, but there’s no snow to shovel.

Randy’s Restaurant

We’ve eaten out many times since arriving in Durango. The variety and quality of the restaurants in Durango is absolutey unmatched by an town this size in the country. You can get a decent meal for 6 dollars in town, and then walk next door and spend 60. Lots of great choices, but I have chosen to only talk about the restaurants that are extraordinary.

Last night we ate at one of those extraordinary restaurants. Randy’s specializes in prime rib. The entrees typically run from 15.00 to 25.00 with a few exceptions.

We arrived at about 6 pm and were given an early bird special. Free salad or soup with our entree. I had the tiger shrimp on linquine with spinach. It was one of the finest meals I’ve eaten in years. The atmosphere was quiet, elegant and unique, and the service was more than outstanding.

As we were leaving, I asked the waitress if we could have a menu to take with us for our guests. The owner, Randy Burton came by the table, introduced himself and gave us menus for our guests along with drink coupons that are good for the entire table. Even if your just drinking soda, its a great deal.

There are 5 or 6 entrees that I need to go back and try. The prime rib, and the trout stand out.

Next time you stay with us, ask for a coupon from Randy’s and have one of the best meals in town.
